URBANACT GROUP _ PUBLIC MURALS
The implementation of wall painting/ mural projects in selected public buildings and schools in Thessaloniki is part of the main programme of the 4th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. The State Museum of Contemporary Art, in collaboration with UrbanAct, has planned a number of art interventions in public spaces, that will improve and give a fresh look to the selected buildings, using one of the most promising and growing forms of modern/contemporary art. In the past few decades, many urban centers in both Greece and abroad have offered the facades of either abandoned or inhabited buildings as a canvas for wall paintings created by street artists. The wall paintings are created with the permission of state entities and owners and are sponsored by public and private cultural institutions and museums. The SMCA wishes to support this form of “street art,” by enriching the city with new interventions. The themes of the public murals will be inspired by the Biennale of Contemporary Art and the city of Thessaloniki.
“THE BIENNALE ... GOES TO SCHOOL”
The educational programme “The Biennale ... goes to school” continues its action during the 4th Thessaloniki Biennial of Contemporary Art, evolved and redesigned. The programme will be hosted for the first time at the 1st High School of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the artistic group Urban Act. The team of SMCA educators will implement a training program for street art and urban art, and the role of arts in our lives, through discussion with the students. The programme includes a stencil workshop and will conclude to a visit at the Biennale exhibitions. This event is of particular importance as it comes to supplement the gap left by the removal of teaching visual arts in schools.
